摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device capable of reducing the number of bits necessary for encoding the sample of a digital picture. SOLUTION: This method for processing a digital signal includes a plurality of samples (a1, a2,..., a9) represented by the coordinates of each axis of a coordinate system with (n) dimensions, where (n) is the dimension of the digital signal. The method comprises a process for judging extreme coordinates (L, R, B, T) on each coordinates axis (x and y) of the coordinate system from the coordinates of those samples; and a process for judging the shortest distance according to a value to be decided from the already judged extreme coordinates from among all distances to be calculated, along each axis between the coordinates of the first sample and the coordinates of each of the elements of a group constituted of the second sample and a plurality of copies of the second sample to be obtained, by moving the second sample in various directions as for all the every possible combination of the samples to be extracted as a pair.
