PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect abnormality of a weft-detecting function and that of a peripheral device substituting a feeler signal. SOLUTION: This method for detecting the abnormality comprises previously setting a weft-absent period so as to omit a weft-present period, amplifying the feeler signal corresponding to incident ray volume to a receiver in the weft-absent period based on an amplification gain previously set so as to correspond to the weft-absent period, comparing the amplified signal with a threshold value for detecting the abnormality, and giving an alarm signal when the amplified signal deviates from the threshold value for detecting the abnormality.
