PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article retaining device temporarily retaining an article, and performing first-in first-out of the retained article. SOLUTION: This article retaining device comprises an outer frame 8; a carrying-in means 2 carrying plural articles into the outer frame 8; a carrying- out means 3 carrying the articles carried by the carrying-in means 2 to the outside of the outer frame 8; a transferring shelf means 4 of a plurality of stages transferring the articles on the carrying-in means 2 when passing through the carrying-in means 2 from a lower side, and transferring the articles on the carrying-out means 3 when passing through the carrying-out means 3 from an upper side; and a circulating means 5 circulating the transferring means 4 of the a plurality of stages at proper intervals along paths respectively passing through the carrying-in means 2 and the carrying-out means 3.
