PURPOSE: A remote monitoring system is provided to monitor the usage status of a software at a customer system located at a remote place over the internet for collecting monitoring data or managing a software license. CONSTITUTION: The system comprises a main server(10) and customer systems(20, 30). The main server(10) includes software usage status management databases(11, 14) and a data management system server(15). The databases(11, 14) store the usage data of the software physically installed at the customer systems(20, 30). The data management system server(15) plays a role of a remote monitoring tool. The customer systems(20, 30) include software usage status management databases(24, 33) and personal computers(22, 23, 31, 32). Data management system agents are installed at each personal computer(22, 23, 31, 32) for collecting objective usage data to offer a software usage time based billing service. The software usage status management databases(24, 33) manage the software usage data of each personal computer(22, 23, 31, 32).
