Films are produced by (a) distribution on an auxiliary surface a film of a liquor resulting from the action of an acid on a polyamide (b) contacting the liquor covered surface with an aqueous liquid in order to coagulate the liquor, (d) detaching the auxiliary surface from the coagulated film, and (d) eliminating at least partly the water in the detached film. Used for coating materials such as paper and cardboard. The coating is very smooth, even when the coated material has a very irregular surface. The coating can be easily printed with lower quantities of printing ink. The coated material may be white or coloured.
