摘要

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium wherein medium noise is remarkably improved in a recording and reproducing system adopting an MR head. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a non-magnetic layer containing non-magnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer containing hexagonal ferrite powder and a binder in this order on a non-magnetic substrate. On the surface of the magnetic layer number of recessed parts having depth of >=1/3 of a minimum recording bit length is <=100 pieces/10,000μm<2> and a central plane average roughness SRa is <=6.0 nm.
