PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording medium playback unit in which a recording medium can be easily loaded and unloaded. SOLUTION: This recording medium playback unit 1 is a device for reading information of a CD 2 as a recording medium and is provided with a device main body 3 and a tray 4. The device main body 3 is of a flat box shape. The tray 4 is provided with a tray main body 5, a pickup part 6 and a lock mechanism. The tray main body 5 is of a flat box shape. The pickup part 6 is supported in a freely displaceable manner with respect to the tray main body 5. The lock mechanism can be freely displaced between an allowable position for allowing the pickup part 6 to be displaced with respect to the tray main body 5 and a regulating position for regulating the displacement of the pickup part 6 with respect to the tray main body 5. The tray 4 is displaced between a playing position at which the tray 4 is housed in the device main body 3 and an extraction position at which the tray 4 is projected out of the device main body 3. When the tray 4 is located at the playing position, a lock mechanism is located at the allowable position. When the tray 4 is located at the extraction position, the lock mechanism is located at the regulating position.
