During stratified charged operation, electronic unit (36) controls inlet valves (22, 24) so as to produce swirl aerodynamic movement in fuel-air mixture entering in combustion chamber (12) of cylinder (10). Swirl movement is obtained due to un-symmetry of fuel-air mixture flow with respect to axis (A-A) of cylinder, i.e. mixture flows quicker on one side as first inlet valve is completely open whilst mixture flows slower on other side as second inlet valve is only partially open. Partial opening duration of one inlet valve is very short with respect to complete opening duration of other valve.
