The invention relates to the use of topically applicable preparations containing a content of: a) a compound or a number of compounds from the group consisting of catechins or bile acid esters of catechins or aqueous or organic extracts from plants or plant parts having a content of catechins or bile acid esters of catechins, for example, from the leaves of the plant family Theaceae, particularly of the species Camellia sinensis (green tea) or typical constituents thereof such as, e.g. polyphenols or catechins, caffeine, vitamins, sugar, minerals, amino acids, lipids and their precursors and derivatives; b) optionally a compound or a number of compounds from the group of electrolytes; c) optionally a compound or a number of compounds from the group of polyols and urea and optionally; d) a compound or a number of compounds from the group of osmolytes, for the treatment and active prevention of dry skin, for reinforcing the barrier function of the skin, and for the treatment, care and prophylaxis of sensitive skin and/or for the treatment and prophylaxis of the symptoms associated with a negative change in the physiological homeostasis of healthy skin, particularly with deficient, sensitive or hypoactive skin conditions or deficient, sensitive or hypoactive conditions of cutaneous appendages, inflammatory skin conditions and atopic eczema, polymorphic photodermatosis, psoriasis, vitiligo, sensitive, itchy or irritated skin, changes in the normal lipid peroxidation, a change in the ceramide, lipid and energy metabolism of healthy skin, a change in the physiological transepidermal water loss, a reduction in skin hydration and decrease in the moisture content of the skin, a change in the natural moisturizing factor content, a reduction in cell-cell communication, deficiency symptoms of the intracellular DNA synthesis, DNA damages and reduction of endogenic DNA repair mechanisms, activation of metal proteinases and/or other proteinases or inhibition of the corresponding endogenic DNA repair mechanisms, deviations from the normal post-translational modifications of connective tissue constituents, changes in the normal hyaluronic acid content and glucose aminoglycan content of healthy skin, scale-formation of the hair, formation of dandruff on the scalp and aging of the skin.
