The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine. According to said method, fuel is injected directly into at least one combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine by means of at least one fuel injection device. The valve element of the fuel injection device is displaced by means of a piezoelectric actuator. Furthermore, the torque produced during the combustion of the fuel quantity injected into the combustion chamber in one injection is determined. The aim of the invention is to optimise the consumption and emission behaviour of the internal combustion engine. To this end, a current valve characteristic (fc) of the fuel injection device integrated into the internal combustion engine is at least approximately determined on the basis of the torque. The valve characteristic (fc) combines a fuel mass flow rate (Qstat), which is to be emitted by the fuel injection device, with a control power (U) which is to be supplied to the piezoelectric actuator.
