The invention relates to a hydraulic braking system for vehicles, in particular motor vehicles. Said system comprises a primary pressure source (2', 2''), supplied with external energy, which supplies the wheel brakes (5) with braking pressure during normal operation, in addition to a pedal-operated auxiliary pressure source (10), which supplies the wheel brakes with braking pressure during emergency operation. To improve safety, a special hydraulic circuit necessitates a closure without leakage of only a comparatively small number of valves between the wheel brakes and a hydraulic reservoir (3) during emergency operation. The safety aspect can be improved by a series connection of the valves.
