The safety valve for shutting off a gas pipe comprises a downward-sloping pipe section (1) with a groove (4), in which a ball (5) sits. If the pipe is ruptured the ball is lifted out of the groove by the gas flow and rolls down the pipe to fit against a valve seat (2, 3) and seal the pipe.
