A method of analysing movement of a golf ball includes transmitting radiation towards a location expected to lie in the path of a golf ball; receiving reflected radiation and generating a signal representative thereof; processing the signal to derive a value indicative of the velocity of the golf ball in a predetermined direction; processing the signal to derive a value indicative of the angular deviation theta of the golf ball trajectory from the predetermined direction; and deriving from the velocity and deviation values an indication of the speed of the ball along its trajectory.
