Automatic identification of different cutting nozzles integrated in a flame cutter and suitable for cutting materials of different thicknesses or different types of materials comprises feeding a gas under defined pressure from a pressure source to the cutting nozzle. The gas feed is then interrupted and the fall in pressure over time is determined and compared with relevant data specific for different cutting nozzle types to identify the cutting nozzle type of the cutting nozzle. An Independent claim is also included for an alternative process. Preferred Features: The gas is oxygen. The pressure is determined by a pressure sensor (18) and the change in pressure over time is fed to a central evaluation unit producing pressure change data for comparing with stored data.
