The invention relates to a fuel cell system comprising a gas generating system, in which a gas, rich in hydrogen, is generated and a fuel cell unit provided with an anode and a cathode. According to said invention, the anode comprises an inlet line for the gas rich in hydrogen and an exhaust line; the cathode comprises an inlet line for a gas rich in oxygen and an exhaust line; a mass flow sensor, for the gas rich in hydrogen, is arranged in the anode inlet line and a thermal mass flow sensor is used as a mass flow sensor.
