A method for identifying the presence of a Pasteuria spore in a soil sample includes the steps of: (a) providing the soil sample; and (b) analyzing the soil sample for the presence of an antigen that is expressed by Pasteuria spores but not spores of other genera. Presence of the antigen is in the sample indicates that the soil sample contains the Pasteuria spore.
