A method of reversibly whitening teeth in the presence of water which comprises allowing a tooth whitening component to penetrate into the enamel surface layer toward the inside and remain therein so as to make the enamel cloudy by altering its optical properties without causing any chemical reactions, thereby whiten the thus treated teeth compared with untreated ones.
