A journal bearing comprises an outer housing 1, an intermediate resilient member 2, and a replaceable thin flexible split liner 3 of plastic material. The liner 3 is circumferentially movable with respect to the resilient member 2 and has a compensation gap 7 equal in width to at least the circumferential expansion of the liner during operation. The liner 3 is preferably a polyamide resin such as nylon. The backing 2 may be rubber having an annular recess 5 for the storage of lubricant. In a modification a plastic liner 13, Fig. 3, is resiliently supported by a corrugated spring 12. The resilient support may be in the form of rubber rings 22, 32 located in grooves 28, 38 in the housings 21, 31, Figs. 4 and 5. To facilitate self-aligning the contacting surfaces of the intermediate resilient member with the liner and housing may be arcuate as shown in Fig. 6. Relative rotation of the bearing members may be prevented by the provision of a radial projection 68, Fig. 8, on the bearing liner which engages gaps in the resilient member 62 and housing 61. In a further modification a split plastic liner 53, Fig. 7, has a tapered outer surface 59 disposed in a correspondingly tapered surface 58 of the housing 51 and the liner is urged into engagement with the shaft by an axial spring 52. |
