The gas filling device has a holder section (1) for a compressed gas cartridge and a head section (2) with a valve. A locking device (4) acts between the holder and head section and makes the connection between the holder equipped with a new cartridge and the head section only when a valve operating device (3) is in the closed position with regard to the valve. The locking device has a locking component which locks or releases the valve operating device.
