An apparatus for cleaning or polishing teeth comprising a socket member 25 arranged to receive the shaft of the cleaning tool, the socket member being mounted on the end of a handle 21 for reciprocation in a direction at right angles to the length of the handle and parallel to the length of the tool, and the socket member being free to turn about an axis parallel to the length of the tool. The socket member 25, which is mounted in a sleeve 22, has a peripheral recess 29, which is engaged by an eccentric pin 31 extending from a rotary shaft 23 within the handle 21, for reciprocating the socket member whilst permitting it to rotate about the axis of a tool received in the socket bore 27. The cleaning tool comprises a shaft (19), Figures 4 and 5, not shown, and a working part extending to the tool point and comprising abrading surfaces (11, 13, 15) set at an acute angle to each other and forming an edge (17) extending in the length direction of the tool. The tool may have transverse grooves or corrigations, or brushes as the abrading surfaces, and said surfaces may further be coated with a harder material, e.g. grinding powder. |
