A superconducting coil structure (SCS) (60) has secondary magnetic coil sections (SMCS) (36,38) and main magnetic coil sections (MMCS) (32,34) separated by a space. The MMCS and SMCS connect in series to form main and secondary coil series connections (50) respectively. A temperature-limiting circuit (40,42) can be a quench-heating/resistor circuit and has quench heaters/resistors (44,46,64,66) linked to the SCS that connects to a superconducting switch (56).
