The adjustable gas spring unit, to assist the movements of an automobile motor hood or trunk lid by compensation of their weight, has a cylinder (1) filled with a medium under pressure and a sliding piston with a projecting piston rod (4). A ring seal (5) has its inner radial periphery around the piston rod, and its outer radial periphery at the inner wall of the cylinder. The ring seal is pressed in place against a support (10) by the pressure medium in the interior (8) of the cylinder. On an overload, the ring seal is distorted at the support surface by telescoping its axial length, and forms a passage opening from the interior of the cylinder to the ambient environment. The support has a section (11) in the cylinder, and a section (13) bonded to it against the ring seal which can move into an overload position when a nominal fracture point is ruptured. A limit stop at the first section holds it in the normal position.
