The device is for detection of fogging of a motor vehicle windscreen (1), whereby the edges (2) of the screen have a multiplicity of electrically conducting surfaces (3). The surfaces are linked together in groups and supplied via electrically conducting material that links them to supply cables (7, 8) so that a sequence of electrodes (4) are formed. The capacitance between adjacent electrodes is measured and used to indicate screen fogging. An Independent claim is made for method for monitoring the windscreen of the motor vehicle whereby capacitances measured between adjacent electrodes are compared with reference capacitances to indicate screen fogger and trigger a demister.
