Production of 6-methyl-2-heptanone (I) comprises hydroformylation of isobutene to give 3-methylbutanal (II); base-catalyzed aldol condensation of (II) with acetone using a (II):base molar ratio of more than 1:0.3 to give 6-methyl-3-hepten-2-one (III); and hydrogenation of (III).
