A system for controlling a vehicle drive train comprises a stored engine characteristic map wherein a region of undesirable engine operation is defined. A control computer estimates the engine torque and compares said estimate with the actual measured engine torque. If the estimated engine torque is less than the actual measured engine torque the engine is allowed to operate anywhere in said characteristic map. If said estimated engine torque is greater than the said actual measured engine torque the engine is operated outside of said undesirable region or in a manner to limit operation in said undesirable region. Further disclosed are functions that may be utilised in computing said torque estimate, including, vehicle speed, rolling resistance, drivetrain drag force, road grade and current fuelling value.
|
