The present invention relates to a catalyst that can be prepared by bringing into contact an oxide of the general formula M-Ali2Oi4, wherein M represents an element of Group Ib, VIIb or VIII of the Periodic Table of the Elements with tin, lead, an element of the group IIa or IIb of the Periodic Table of the Elements as oxide or salt or in elemental form and calcining thereof at a temperature of about 300 to about 1300 degC under pressure of 10 kPa to 20 MPa.
