PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily preparing ethyl 3-hydroxy-3-(2- phenylethyl)hexanoate in high yield useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals and to provide an activated zinc useful for an organic synthesis reaction and a method for easily and safely preparing the activated zinc. SOLUTION: The activated zinc has been activated with chlorotrimethylsilane and a copper compound in an aprotic organic solvent. In the method for preparing ethyl 3-hydroxy-3-(2-phenylethyl)hexanoate, the activated zinc, ethyl bromoacetate and 1-phenyl-3-hexanone are brought into a Reformatskij reaction.
