PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recorder in which the type of a recording material set at a manual feeding section, disposed on the front side of the recorder, can be judged readily using a single sensor and a feed operation such as positioning of the forward end of the recording material, for starting recording is executed appropriately corresponting to the type of the recording material. SOLUTION: At a part other than a recess 47 of a CD tray 40, an L-shaped reflective part 80 having reflectivity on the same order as that of a thick paper, e.g. a board sheet, is provided. A unit for judging a recording material is arranged to judge a CD or a thick paper held in the CD tray based on the reflective part 80, movement of a sensor 27 in a specified range related to the reflective part 80, carriage and stoppage of the recording material at the carrying section, and detection of reflected light from the recording material having aforementioned reflectivity at a specified moving point.
