PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove a foreign matter that becomes a seed of abnormal discharge before reaching discharge. SOLUTION: This is an electrostatic cleaning process that removes a foreign matter 8 that may become a seed of abnormal discharge from an electron source substrate (cathode substrate) 1 having an electron-emitting element (not shown in the figure) or an anode substrate 1 (herein after called 'substrate 1') having a light-emitting member (not shown in the figure) that emits light by the irradiation of electrons emitted from the electron-emitting element and an anode that impresses high voltage to the light-emitting member. The process comprises a process in which an electrode 2 that has a member 3 made of a semiconductor or an insulating body on the surface is arranged with the face provided with the member 3 opposed to the substrate 1, and a process for impressing an electric field between the substrate 1 and the electrode 2.
