PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CCD image pickup element wherein high speed reading, reading by necessary resolution and improvement of image quality in a divided region are enabled. SOLUTION: A plurality of CCD cells 82 which have sensitivity to a visible region and an infrared region, respectively, are arranged in a vertical and lateral matrix type. Gate parts 84 are arranged in the vicinities of the CCD cells 82, corresponding to the respective CCD cells 82, and vertical transfer parts 86 are formed by using the gates 84. The vertical transfer parts 86 transfer electrons to different directions in every other row. Electrons transferred from the vertical transfer parts 86 of odd number rows are transferred to a horizontal transfer part 88 for odd number rows, and electrons transferred from the vertical transfer parts 86 of even number rows are transferred to a horizontal transfer part 90 for even number rows. That is, electrons transferred from the vertical transfer parts 86 are transferred to the two horizontal transfer parts 88, 90 in order. Electrons transferred from the respective horizontal transfer parts 88, 90 are amplified via amplifiers 92, 94 and processed independently.
