PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the harmful effect of leakage flux and make effective use of both magnet torque and reluctance torque in a balanced manner in a brushless DC motor which uses both magnet torque and reluctance torque. SOLUTION: The width of a rib on the side of the outer circumference of a magnet of a rotor is defined appropriately. Thus, the rib is made to reach a saturation magnetic flux in the circumferential direction both by the leakage component of the flux of the magnet and by the leakage component of the flux which links from a stator to the rotor. As a result, magnet torque or reluctance torque is hardly influenced by fluctuation in flux leakage.
