PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-quality image at high speed by temporarily holding a visible image formed on a latent image bearing member on an intermediate transfer medium, and always stably removing toner remaining on the surface of the intermediate transfer medium in image forming for transferring the visible image to the image carrier. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus has the latent image bearing member 1, electrifying devices 21 to 24, laser exposure means 31 to 34, developing units 41 to 44, an intermediate transfer roll 8, and an intermediate cleaning mechanism 11. The intermediate cleaning mechanism 11 is provided with a cleaning roller 111 which is pressed to an intermediate transfer roll 8 to transfer the toner remaining on the surface of the intermediate transfer roll 8, and a blade 112 which scrapes soiling by toner on the surface of the cleaning roller 111. The cleaning roller 111 has a hollow metallic roller 111A in which an infrared ray heater 111D is built as a core material. A silicone rubber layer having hardness of 40 and thickness of 2.0 mm is formed on the core material as an elastic body layer 111B, and a stainless steel layer having thickness of 30 micrometers is formed at the outer side as a metallic layer 111C.
