PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately hold the moving speed of a film constantly at the time of primary scanning in a film scanner and to accurately hold the film speed constantly as well when the film is wound in a cartridge. SOLUTION: The method for controlling the film scanner comprises the steps of rotatably driving the winding shaft 1a of the cartridge 1 by a first stepping motor 4, and moving the film 2 drawn out from the cartridge 1 in a longitudinal direction by a second stepping motor 7. The method further comprises the steps of primarily scanning the film 2 while the film 2 is moved in a winding direction in the cartridge 1, and controlling so that the film winding speed of the shaft 1a is always slower than the film sending speed of a drive roller 5 at the time of primary scanning at a substantially constant speed.
