PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk drive capable of suppressing the number of retrying times of a moving operation and a method for controlling optical pickup movement. SOLUTION: A nonvolatile memory 335 for storing a maximum rotational speed is mounted on the disk drive 300. The nonvolatile memory 335 stores the maximum rotational speed (e.g. maximum rotational speed V4) of a stepping motor 100 when loss of synchronism is not detected any more by retrying a seek operation. In this case, the power of the disk drive 300 is turned off after the maximum rotational speed V4 is stored in the nonvolatile memory 335, and when the power of the disk drive 300 is turned on again, a controlling part 330 of the disk drive 300 acquires the maximum rotational speed V4 of the stepping motor 100 stored in the nonvolatile memory 335, i.e., the maximum speed of rotation of the stepping motor 100 when loss of synchronism is not detected any more in a seek operation mode and sets the maximum speed as the maximum rotational speed for the stepping motor 100.
