The procedure consists of abrading the tread of each tire to expose the metal, cutting off the beads and side walls to separate them from the tread, and subjecting the different parts to a liquid solvent for sufficient time to soften the rubber and allow the metal parts to be removed by mechanical action and sorted. During the solvent steeping process the parts of the tire are agitated mechanically and subjected to repeated shocks, while the solvent temperature is maintained at 30 - 40 deg C. The apparatus used for the procedure includes a unit (10) on which the tire tread is abraded, a chamber (20) in which the tire parts are steeped in the solvent, a separating unit (30) for the rubber and metal components, and a sorting unit (40).
