PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make not only the communication between mobile stations through a base station but also the direct communication between the mobile stations easily performable, in a digital radio system containing the base station and a plurality of mobile stations connected to each other through the base station and radio channels. SOLUTION: Not only a period in which PCH (call information) can be received through a control channel for base station communication but also a period in which a synchronizing signal can be received from a call originating mobile station through a control channel for direct communication are provided by shortening the sleep (nonreceiving states) of the mobile stations. In addition, mobile stations which are not in busy states automatically switch control channels (control channels for base station communication and control channels for direct communication) at the same timing.
