Respiratory apparatus comprises a mixing compartment (20) in which air and oxygen are mixed. Air is supplied to the compartment via a first line (21), while oxygen is supplied to the compartment via a second line (22). The oxygen line has an additional proportional valve (23) and a flowmeter (24). A control unit (25) receives a signal from the flowmeter and uses it to adjust the valve so that a desired oxygen mixture is obtained. An Independent claim is made for a method for controlling the flow rate of oxygen supplied to a mixing compartment of a respiratory apparatus.
