Lubricant material capable of forming a high viscosity film is added to the elastic layer where it is not covered by the web. - A method for operating a press used to shrink a web of material (especially paper) comprises passing the web through a press nip between an elastic layer provided by a roll cover or endless belt and a hard metal surface on a roll, whilst maintaining a speed differential between the roll and belt. Lubricant is added to the elastic layer where it is not covered by the web and this lubricant comprises a material which forms a film with a sufficiently high viscosity to prevent it from being broken up due to the pressure, speed differential and temperature in the nip. The lubricant is chemically inert relative to the elastic layer and metal roll. |
