PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source device irradiating the whole LCD panel in uniform brightness distribution, having high brightness, and high screen quality. SOLUTION: This surface light source device contains a light guide plate 31 having a light outgoing surface 31b and a light incoming surface 31a; a rod-shaped light source 32 facing the light incoming surface 31a; a light source reflector 35 reflecting light coming from the rod-shaped light source 32 and guiding it to the light incoming surface 31a; a prism sheet 33 facing the light coming out surface 31 and arranged so that a prism projection group 33a faces to the light guide plate 31 side; and a reflecting plate 34 arranged so as to face the back surface of the light guide plate 31, and a light introduction means introducing light from the rod-shaped light source 32 into the light incoming surface 31a facing the vicinity of electrodes 32a at both end parts of the rod- shaped light source 32 is installed, and a light diffusion means diffusing light coming in the light guide plate is installed in the light incoming surface 31a of the light guide plate 31.
