PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple and very satisfactory recording medium reproducing device for enabling a user to recognize a recording medium without depending on management information, and to provide a recording medium reproducing method. SOLUTION: The recording medium reproducing device for reproducing a recording medium consisting of a recording part for recording a signal and a label area showing contents of a corresponding record is provided with a housing 100 for housing the recording medium, a recording medium reproducing part 7 for reproducing a record signal from the recording medium, an image reader 10 for emitting light to the label area and generating image data of the label area on the basis of light reflected from the label area, a memory 3 for storing the image data, a video output terminal for outputting a video signal, and a processor for reading data stored in the memory 3, converting the read data into a video signal and issuing a command to be outputted from the video output terminal.
