Production of tetraacetyl dibenzyl hexaaza isowurtzitane (I) comprises reacting hexabenzyl hexaaza isowurtzitane (II) with acetic anhydride in dimethylformamide in the presence of hydrogen, a palladium catalyst and a cocatalyst selected from brominated aromatic compounds and hydrobromic acid. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of hexanitro hexaaza isowurtzitane by nitrosating (I) produced as above and nitrating the product; (2) the alpha polymorphic form of hexanitro hexaaza isowurtzitane.
