A transport system for containers comprises an operating device with linear guide means (17, 20, 21) for the transformation of a uniform circular motion of a motor (23) into a linear harmonic motion with a substantially sinusoidal velocity in a longitudinal direction (X). The operating device is controlled so as to vary the rotational speed of the motor (23) and to obtain a substantially bell−shaped velocity profile, for gradually accelerating and decelerating the containers so as to obtain a precise advance and positioning thereof without the need for further means for centring the containers.
