The building (1), inside or outside which is a vertical hoist for goods and or lift for people, has fixed guides (60,65) on the track (7) along which the hoist (40) runs. A suspension cable-line (10) consisting of several support cables is guided over fixed deflector rollers (14) at the top(6) of the track. One end (11) of the cable holds a suspended hoist ; the other cable-line end holds a suspended compensating weight (50). A drive mechanism (30) has a cable drive (31) with drive-disc for a separate drive mechanism cable-line (20) consisting of several support cables. One cable-line end is attached underneath to the hoist, and the other end to the compensating weight. Near the foot (8) below the track is a tensioning appliance (70) containing a to and fro moving counterweight.
