A paving block with improved drainage properties has grooves (2) on the underside to form water storage voids to take up water and gradually allow it to soak into the ground. The grooves extend the full width of the block and can have a variety of cross sectional shapes. The groove depth is 13 to 20 percent of the thickness of the block. Vertical ribs on the sides of the block provide simple spacing to adjoining blocks. The top surface of the block is smooth and has a slight slope from the center to the edges to assist drainage. The edges are chamfered.
