For the operation of an internal combustion motor, only oxygen and exhaust gas pass through the intake and, during the exhaust stroke, part of the exhaust gas remains in the cylinder. At the end of the exhaust stroke, the inlet valve is opened to give a flow into the cylinder of compressed oxygen, oxygen/exhaust gas or air. The inlet valve is closed prematurely for the remaining piston movement to give a compression.
