The invention relates to coating of paper and paperboard and is especially directed towards a novel pigment coating composition for coating of paper and paperboard. The novel coating composition contains pigment, latex, optionally a polymer made of hydrophobic monomers in the presence of starch and/or plain starch, if necessary, known additives used in coating compositions, and in addition styrene maleic imide.
