<p>A liquid crystal display comprising a liquid crystal cell (31), polarizers (33, 34) disposed on both sides of the liquid crystal cell, an optical compensating element (32) disposed at least on one side of the liquid crystal cell between the liquid crystal cell and the polarizer, wherein the twist angle of a liquid crystal material layer (31A) in the liquid crystal cell is set to 180-270º, the optical compensating element has a twist structure twisted in the opposite direction to that of the liquid crystal material layer, the difference of the absolute value between the twist angles of the liquid crystal material layer and the optical compensating element is 40-100º, the difference of the retardation at the wavelength λ = 550 nm is 100-250 nm, the ratio of the absolute value of the difference between the retardations at the wavelength λ = 400 nm and at the wavelength λ = 550 nm of the liquid crystal material layer to that of the optical compensating element ranges from 0.5 to 1.0, whereby white display with high contrast and with favorable luminance and hue is achieved in the normally black mode, and paper-white, bright white display and favorable black display are achieved in the normally white mode.</p> |
