Process for operating an internal combustion engine, especially an Otto engine with direct injection, especially of a motor vehicle, comprises determining a quantity of fuel for injection as a function of a temperature and a speed of the engine on restarting of the engine after a thrust operation with blended fuel supply, increasing a regularly injected quantity of fuel by an additional quantity, and regulating the additional quantity of fuel to be injected as a function of a cycle speed since the restarting. At the end of the thrust operation a correction value is determined from the duration of the thrust operation over a characteristic line (14) and/or a performance characteristic (24), and the additional quantity of fuel to be injected is corrected by this correction value.
