The protective floor mat (10), for automobile interiors and luggage compartments, has a multi-layer structure where the top layer (11) can be removed when worn to expose a fresh lower layer. The layers are of paper or plastics, with a non-slip coating (16) on at least one side of them over at least a part of the surface area. The coating allows layers to be peeled off, and exposed coatings trap dirt particles. The layers are assembled into a block (15), with tear contour lines (22,23,28) for each layer.
