The present invention relates to novel blue-shifted variants of the fluorescent protein GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) having improved fluorescence properties. The invention provides a fluorescent protein which is derived from GFP, or any functional GFP analogue, and has an amino acid sequence which is modified by amino acid substitution compared with the amin o acid sequence of wild type GFP, the modified fluorescent protein comprising: i) an amino acid substitution at position F64; ii) an amino acid substitutio n at position Y66; and iii) an amino acid substitution at position S175; where in the modified GFP has a different excitation spectrum and/or emission spectru m compared with wild type GFP.
